Sara Royle

Freelance journalist & copywriter

About Me

When I was 10 years old, I had a letter published in The Funday Times (the ace children's supplement in The Sunday Times). It was my first byline - I've been chasing more of them ever since.

I qualified as a senior reporter while working for The Westmorland Gazette in Cumbria, covering everything from court cases to council meetings (as well as the odd sheep rustle).

Having left the newspaper, I now work freelance. Most of my time is spent as a broadcast journalist at BBC Five Live. My role consists of pitching news stories, interviewing potential guests, writing briefs for presenters and organising logistics.

I also write freelance, both as a journalist and a copywriter. My most recent writing gig was with Manchester International Festival - you can read more about that below.

When I'm not making radio or writing articles, you're most likely to find me running, in the library or throwing around flour in my kitchen.

A Selection Of My Work

I sourced the story, set up a radio segment for BBC Five Live and then wrote up an article for BBC News online.

In Their Own Words is a series of audio diaries from young people in lockdown. It was funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority as part of their COVID-19 Creative Commissions.

I created an 18 day schedule for the festival's live blog. This involved interviewing participants, artists, staff, volunteers, providing live coverage from events and writing reviews.

It's an interview with the poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay. It was featured on the front page of The Big Issue North.

One of a number of campaigns that I ran for The Westmorland Gazette. Each week I told the story of somebody involved with St John's Hospice and asked readers for donations to help pay for one of the hospice staff members - know as 'Hospice Angels'.
